The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) – the federal agency charged with enforcing workplace discrimination laws – has released an updated poster that employers are required to prominently display in the workplace.
The “Know Your Rights” poster replaces the previous “EEO is the Law” poster. The update describes, in plain language, the federal laws prohibiting job discrimination based on race, color, sex (including pregnancy and related conditions, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, religion, age (40 and older), equal pay, disability or genetic information (including family medical history or genetic tests or services), and retaliation for filing a charge, reasonably opposing discrimination, or participating in a discrimination lawsuit, investigation, or proceeding. It also explains how an employee or job applicant can file a complaint if they believe they have experienced discrimination.
The “Know Your Rights” poster should be placed in a conspicuous location in the workplace where notices to applicants and employees are customarily posted. The EEOC encourages employers to supplement the physical posting electronically on the company website and/or via email. You can download the new “Know Your Rights” poster here.
A failure to properly display the poster may incur monetary penalties.
